The new year is coming up fast, and it’s time to decide what we want to spend our time focusing on in 2019. One easy thing to add to your list that will undoubtedly make your life a bit easier is finding small ways to become more positive in the new year. One prevalent resolution nowadays is to focus on self-care. There is no better way to take care of yourself than to become more positive. Increased positivity can help you be happier, less stressed, and even healthier. If you want to focus on being more positive in the new year, here are a few ways to make that happen.
Make Positive Resolutions
Okay, so this might sound a little strange, but one great way to be more positive in the new year is to start with resolutions that will help you get there. Here’s what I mean: we all have big goals for ourselves and what we want to accomplish in the new year, right? I love dreaming big, but sometimes making all of my resolutions with a “think big” mindset isn’t the best way to put more positivity into my life. If all of your resolutions are new things you haven’t done before, you might want to re-think them. Start by thinking about all of the great things you’ve accomplished this year. You can even write them down if you want! Then, think about building your resolutions from that list. That way you’re already in a groove, and you’ll feel like those goals are easier to accomplish.
By all means, you can add “run a marathon” or “practice Meatless Mondays,” even if you’ve never run a mile or made a vegetarian meal. Those big goals are also important because they feed our ambition. However, be sure use positive language in your goals – for example, “practice Meatless Mondays” instead of “stop eating so much meat.” Positive language automatically helps you be more positive. Just make sure that most of your goals are within reach. Hitting more of your goals and resolutions will help you be more positive throughout the year, too! You can also further incentivize yourself to accomplish these goals, by not only setting goals but setting goals & rewards.
Focus on the Positive Things in Your Life
Whether you notice it or not, good things are happening in your life; I can just about guarantee it. One way to harness that positive energy is to focus on it. Consider journaling about a positive experience you have every day.
Another option is to create a gratitude log and make a list of three (or four, or five…whatever you want) things you are grateful for each day! I know some days just feel really, really bad, so reflecting on the good things that happened can help you be more positive by shining a light on the good things you may have overlooked. Sometimes you might think the only things you can be grateful for our food, snuggly blankets, and a nice bed, and that’s certainly good enough. Other days you might have enough things to be thankful for to fill an entire page. Either way, taking time to focus on the good things in your life will help you be more positive.
Help Someone Else
Positivity is best if it’s shared! Commit to sharing positivity with one person every day. This is a great way to remember to be more positive because it’s easy to help make someone else’s day bright if you’re already having a good day. Though, if you’re not having a great day, doing something nice for someone else is likely going to cheer you up a bit. In that case, not only have you become more positive, but you’ve increased positivity in the world, as well!
Spend Time with Positive People
Is your best friend always willing to talk and laugh with you? Does your coworker share a smile with you every morning – even on Mondays? When you visit with family, do you share funny or meaningful stories that bring everyone in the room joy? No matter who it is, plan to spend more time with people who make you more positive. Whether you plan brunch with your friends once a month or host a movie night at your house, spending time with happy people will make you happier. And if someone in your group isn’t feeling positive, see above: help them develop a positive attitude! Sharing laughter and smiles with people you love is a surefire way to add more positivity to your life.
Are You Ready for a Positive Year?
There are so many more ways to increase your positivity in the new year, but these four are some of the easiest to put into practice. By setting realistic goals that you know you’ll be able to accomplish, you’re setting yourself up for a successful and positive 2019. So what are you waiting for? Start living more positively and see how it changes your life!
