Whether you’re looking for new pens to start your first bullet journal or an experienced journaler, I have put together a list of the best bullet journal pens I have found and used.
You can spend hours researching good pens to use. Stand in front of the pen display at your local store or search online for hours because it can be overwhelming with all the choices out there.
When it comes to starting a bullet journal, one of the hardest things is finding the right supplies. You don’t want to spend a ton of money and not use them.
However, you also want to do everything you can to set yourself up for success.
Luckily, I’ve been bullet journaling for years, and I’m going to share the best bullet journal pens I’ve found so that you can get started with your bullet journal right away!
Finding The Best Pens For Bullet Journaling
It can be hard to find the right pen for bullet journals, but it does not have to be. Here are a few things to look for when you are choosing your bullet journal pens.
- How versatile are they? Can you use them for multiple spreads, or do they just have a single-use?
- Do they have good reviews?
- Are they too expensive?
- Is it worth getting the name brand, or should I go with a cheaper option? (In my experience, it’s worth going with the proven brand)
- Have I used this brand before, and if so, did I like the feel?
- Am I actually going to use these pens?

I want to use the system called “Year in pixels” but I don’t what pen to color the blocks.
I’m looking for pens that don’t bleed or leek through.
Greetings,
Midliners are a great option to color in your Year in Pixels Daan!
This might not be the pens you’re looking for but it’s what I used for Year in Pixels. I used the Muji gel pens and they work perfectly fine for me.
I love the Pilot Metropolitan, too! Mine has just a regular tip and uses gel refills, so it’s not a fountain pen, but I love how colorful it is (and inexpensive it was). Some of my other go-to pens are Muji pens and a random Diplomat fountain pen that I bought from a mall kiosk in Montreal. For some reason it writes much more nicely than my other FPs, and I haven’t been able to find any others like it.
Hi Shelby, can you talk about / show how you organize and keep your pens and other papers? How do you utilize space at your desk? Do you have special holders?
Thanks!
Oooh, that’s a good question, Ann. My pen system is constantly changing! Currently, I’m using a bunch of random jars/cups/recycled cartons to hold my pens. Oh, and one skull vase that I bought at Halloween 🙂 Tell you what! I’ll post on my Instagram stories (@little_coffee_fox) in the next few days with a picture of my pen situation. Hopefully that explains my desk organization better than this comment!
Microns are so good!! I’m also super obsessed with my Zebra Mildliner highlighters!!!!
Yes!! Love them both!
